Battle field medicine vietnam war1/9/2024 The US Army Institute of Surgical Research (2006) reported higher survival rates in patients with pre-hospital tourniquet use compared to hospital application (89% vs 78%). No early adverse outcomes related to tourniquet use were reported. Results: Data collected in field hospitals in Iraq have shown pre-hospital tourniquet use was associated with increased haemorrhage control. Purpose: The purpose of this paper was to review the history of the tourniquet, its use and success in recent conflicts in the Middle East, and how this success has translated to both civilian medical services and the general public’s increasing awareness. Despite this, tourniquets returned to military use in the 1990s via US Special Forces, who aggressively advocated their use. Concerns and unfortunate dogmas from these conflicts persisted, and tourniquets were not recommended in civilian practice. This poor reputation developed through several conflicts, from the US Civil War to Vietnam. Background: Despite its use from Alexander the Great’s war with Persia to current conflicts in the Middle East, the tourniquet has been considered both a lifesaver and invention of the Devil.
